Frequently Asked Questions

What is the swing set made from?
Each SYS swing set is built using pressure-treated lumber, premium steel brackets, and weather-resistant hardware selected for years of outdoor use. Specifically Pine.
Why are there knots, grain and small cracks in the wood?
Wood is a natural material.
Every beam has its own grain pattern, knots and character. As it adjusts to Austin's heat and humidity, you will notice small surface splits and cracks.
These are completely normal and do not affect the structural integrity of the wood.
Wait... my beam cracked!
If you're seeing a narrow crack running with the grain, don't panic.
This is called a check and happens as wood naturally dries.
Totally expected and actually part of using real timber outdoors. Ours is still standing. Year 7.
If you ever have concerns, send us a photo and we're happy to take a look.
Will the wood change color?
Definitely.
Like all outdoor wood products, the lumber will naturally weather over time.
Some families love the silver patina that develops. Others choose to reseal or stain the wood every few years to maintain its original appearance.
Can I stain or paint it later?
Absolutely.
What weight can it hold?
Our systems are designed for active family use.
For the full set we recommend no more than 250 lbs of weight and force under the middle of the beam.
No more that 350 for the whole set.Specific weight recommendations vary depending on the beam length and swing configuration selected.
Bucket SwingUp to 50 lb
Belt SwingUp to 150 lb
Flat SwingUp to 150 lb
Spider / Saucer SwingUp to 300 lb
Hammock / Basket Seat Up to 200 lb
Check manufacturer's rating for additional safety. SYS is not responsible for over capacity damage. -
How much space do I need?
Minimum required space for a 10’ Beam is 14’ (length) x 16’ depth.
During your design consultation, we'll help determine which beam length and swing configuration fits your space while maintaining safe play areas.
My yard isn't perfectly flat. Can I still have a swing set?
Probably!
Many Austin yards have some slope. We can install in mildly sloped yards, but steeper grades may require leveling or light landscaping before installation.
We'll help you determine what's possible during your consultation.
How flat is "flat enough?"
As a general guide:
• Super Flat — Ready to install
• Flat Enough — Usually ready with little or no prep
• Mid Slope — May need minor grading
• Pretty Hilly — Likely requires some landscaping
• Hill Country — Ground leveling is needed before installation
Do you level my yard?
Nope.
For safety reasons we don't excavate or regrade properties. If your yard needs leveling, we're happy to recommend trusted local landscaping partners.
How do I know if my yard is level enough? The easiest way is with a straight board and a level.
Place an 8-foot straight board (or long level) where one side of your swing set will sit.
Place a carpenter's level on top.
Lift the downhill end until the bubble is centered.
Measure the gap between the board and the ground at the lifted end.
Repeat in a few locations throughout the installation area.
If the yard appears relatively consistent, you're likely in great shape. During your backyard consultation, we'll confirm everything before installation.
Can you help me choose?
Absolutely.
You don't need to know which beam, swings or colors you want before reaching out.
We'll walk through everything together.
-
Do I have to assemble anything?
Nope.
We handle the installation.
Do I have to prepare the space?
Your yard should be reasonably level and free of obstacles, and any required grading or leveling should be completed ahead of time.
We don't offer excavation or landscaping services, but we do have a trusted local partner we'd be happy to recommend if your yard needs a little prep.
Then we'll take care of the fun part. 🌿

Repeat in a few locations throughout the installation area.
If the yard appears relatively consistent, you're likely in great shape. During your backyard consultation, we'll confirm everything before installation.
How long does installation take?
Most installations are completed in a single visit. 1-2 hours.
Do I need to be home?
We recommend someone be available at the beginning and end of the installation, but you don't need to watch us work.
Required access.
We’ll need access through a standard side or back gate. We won’t use your home to access the backyard. Will you haul away packaging?
Yup!
We leave your backyard ready to enjoy.

What surface should my swing set sit on?
Grass works best for many families.
Do you install anchors?
When appropriate, yes.
Ground conditions vary across Central Texas, and we'll recommend the best anchoring solution for your property.
My kids are absolutely wild. Is this built for that?
😂 We have kids too.
They're climbers, jumpers, upside-down hangers and professional "watch this!" experts.
Our goal is to build something that stands up to real family life however, play hard with in reason and with in weight requirements.
Can adults swing too?
Yes!
Parents are encouraged to join the fun within the recommended weight limits for each swing. You can find more info under All about your swing set in the FAQ section.
Can I add more swings later?
Usually.
One of the things we love most about SYS is flexibility.
Many customers add a spider swing, hammock or additional seat later as their family grows.
Keep in mind that initial set designs are meant to accommodate your choices. Most seats require different installation requirements. Consultation is suggest. -
How much does a swing set cost?
Pricing depends on beam size, swing selection and accessories.
How long does the process take?
Most projects move from consultation to installation within a few weeks, depending on scheduling and material availability.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes.
50% down. 50% due ahead of install.
-
Will this kill my grass?
Some grass beneath heavily used swings will naturally wear over time. That's true for every swing set.
Can I move it later?
Yes, but it's not as simple as dragging it across the yard. We don’t recommend moving the set on rock or gravel.
Side Yard Swings is not responsible for the safety, performance, or structural integrity of products that have been moved or altered after installation.
Can you install over sprinkler systems?
Maybe.
Additional water will decrease the longevity of the wood. We suggest avoiding best as possible and to let us know prior to installation. What if I don't know where it should go?
We'll help you think through shade, mowing, drainage, traffic flow, future landscaping and swing clearance before making a recommendation.
Do I need HOA approval?
Maybe.
Some neighborhoods have restrictions.
We recommend checking with your HOA before scheduling installation.
Can I put it next to my fence?
Most times!
We'll recommend safe clearances while making the most of your available space.
What if my dog chews the swings?
😂 We can't stop your dog...
...but replacement swings are available if life happens.
Will it squeak?
A little movement is normal over time.
If something sounds unusual, let us know and we're happy to help troubleshoot.
Does rain hurt it?
No.
Our materials are selected for outdoor use year-round.
Like any outdoor structure, routine care will help maximize its lifespan.
What maintenance should I expect?
Very little.
An occasional hardware check, cleaning, and visual inspection are usually all that's needed.
Will it get hot in the Texas sun?
Metal components can become warm during peak summer heat.
We recommend checking swing surfaces before play on especially hot afternoons.
Can grandparents buy one as a gift?
Yes, PLEASE. 😍
They're one of our favorite customers.
